Zack Snyder, Star Wars, and Netflix?

Zack Snyder, the director behind the 4-hour Justice League movie and the extremely popular Army of the Dead, has created a Star Wars movie. Not just any kind of Star Wars movie, but one that is gritty, dark, and intended for adult audiences. He had pitched his movie to Lucasfilm back in 2013 but was turned down. Now, about eight years later, it looks like his movie will become a reality.

Snyder’s Star Wars movie is loosely based on Seven Samurai, a 1954 Japanese Samurai epic directed by Akira Kurosawa. His adventure follows the tale of seven Samurai who are hired to protect a small village from bandits. It had a huge influence on George Lucas’ ideas for Star Wars: A New Hope, the movie that started it all. He even tried to cast one of the Samurais from Seven Samurai to be Obi-Wan Kenobi. That is before he had gotten Alec Guinness for the role.

Rebel Moon is the title for Snyder’s Star Wars-themed movie, and it will take place in the outer rim part of the galaxy. It looks like it will be its own theme and IP, straying away from the characters we’ve come to know and love. The movie will follow a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy, threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people will dispatch a woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from a neighboring planet to help them make a stand.”

It sounds a lot like The Mandalorian Chapter 4. This is a theme that has been seen in other movies, but this idea sounds intriguing. Zack Snyder’s direction for this film will be more mature, so it will more than likely show the harsh realities of harsh leaders like Balisarius and the abuse that smaller villages take from such figures.

Production is set to begin early next year, with no official release date yet. It looks like Netflix will be taking a stab at creating a sci-fi film on par with Star Wars. Snyder will lead the team to develop not only this movie but the world-building that it will require. He is a creative mind who has shown some very intriguing yet dark stories.

What is your take on this Zack Snyder Star Wars cut? Do you think he’ll have what it takes to create the next great sci-fi movie?
