The director for Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi, recently interviewed with Rolling Stone to discuss his latest project and some things we may expect from him in the future. This interview has been all over the internet, as he this is the one he supposedly “forgot” about Natalie Portman’s role in the Prequels.
That had made a lot of fans nervous about the possibility of someone who doesn’t know Star Wars very well directing a Star Wars movie. But it could have just be an honest mistake, as she was just in his Thor: Love and Thunder, and he was making conversation, or it is Waititi’s signature trolling.
Whatever the case may be, he has got a lineup of movies to work on, but still, the the most anticipated are his Star Wars projects. He is supposed to write and direct a trilogy. Waititi will have a lot of creative freedom with these movies, especially because he has talked about his plans to stray away from the characters we know and love and introduce new faces.
The interviewer for Rolling Stone had brought up the possibility of his movies becoming abandoned, as there is a long list of projects that Kathleen Kennedy has pulled the plug on, but he remained professional and optimistic.
Here is Waititi’s response:
Might happen to me! And I think Taika [of] 10 years ago would be so panicked and nervous at the prospect of that. But if it’s not right, it’s not right. If it’s not ready, it’s not ready. [With] Star Wars, I don’t want to rush. It’s something I wouldn’t want to just leap into and not feel that it’s unique, it’s my film, and it makes sense. Because that would be a disaster. I’m writing at the moment. So I’m gonna do my best to come up with an idea that everyone loves.
Waititi, Rolling Stone
The response was cool, calm, and collected, showing that this jokester has a serious, professional side. With such a great sense of humor and the ability to know the time and pace, It is no wonder he has become one of the most highly sought after creators in Hollywood right now.
There is no definitive answer as to what will happen with his movies, but it feels they have been on the back burner for quite some time. It could be because the ones who call the shots at Disney are gearing up to head in a new direction. Waititi has now officially expressed how he feels if they do and his calm attitude toward it makes it feel like it is a possibility. Only time will tell at this point.
