The Disney+ hit show, The Mandalorian, has reportedly begun filming in Manhattan Beach, CA.

The source behind this exciting news is American Cinematographer. The news has not been confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney yet. But, the American Cinematographer article had covered the advancements made in the technology of VFX for the third season.

“Shows that planned to leverage in-camera VFX from the start include two that will be shot using StageCraft, Industrial Light & Magic’s real-time animation pipeline for LED volumes: The Book of Boba Fett, which will be released later this year, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, set for release in 2022. Both series will use the same volume initially built for The Mandalorian in Manhattan Beach, Calif. More Star Wars shows, including Andor, are in production at Pinewood Studios in England, where ILM has built another large StageCraft volume. Season 3 of The Mandalorian is now in production.”

Din Djarin and Bo Katan

Pedro Pascal will be returning as Din Djarin, as he now wields the darksaber. Season 2 had left off with Din Djarin partnering up with Bo Katan (Katee Sackhoff) to find and kill Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito). The child had been handed off to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, so we will most likely follow Din Djarin as he tries to balance being a lone bounty hunter with the politics of his people and the darksaber.

The VFX employs an LED wall, tracked cameras, and real-time graphics rendering. The technology was used for both seasons of The Mandalorian. Since the premiere of the show in 2019, VFX technology has advanced even further. VFX also allows for shooting and production to be done more remotely. The limitations placed by the pandemic were able to be avoided with this technology.

The Mandalorian has also recently been nominated for 24 Academy Awards. An incredible feat by the team.
