The Obi-Wan Kenobi series has finally begun filming and there have been some set shots revealed. The series that is set to come out on Disney+ sometime in 2022 will star Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as bringing back a few other names from the prequels, like Hayden Christensen and Joel Edgerton. The set photos didn’t reveal too much about what to see, but it is still exciting to get some updates.
The photos featured, of course, Tatooine. There is a hint of the desert planet with two suns in the photos, as well as a familiar creature, the bantha. The bantha is used by the Tusken Raiders as a means of transportation across the harsh desert climate. A climate so harsh that it rapidly aged Obi-Wan Kenobi over 18 years there.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set to take place ten years after the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Luke will be around ten years old, so we may get to see a younger version of him. Hayden Christensen will be returning as Darth Vader, and Kathleen Kennedy has gone on record with saying that Kenobi and Vader will be the “rematch of the century.” Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, has also stated that we can expect to see a rematch between the two.
Perhaps we will see Vader attempting to track down Kenobi, and we will see them clash then. It only leaves us to wonder where that fight will take place. Will it be on Anakin’s old home? Or will Kenobi lead him somewhere off the planet and away from Luke? No matter where it takes place, we can expect it to be absolutely epic.
The show will avoid the overuse of the green screen. That was a major critique of the prequels, and so the series will embrace the techniques used in The Mandalorian. Ewan McGregor has said that we can expect it to feel more realistic, “They project the virtual backgrounds onto this massive LED screen.” He is referring to the StarCraft technology that was used for The Mandalorian, “So, if you’re in a desert, you’re standing in the middle of a desert, if you’re in the snow, you’re surrounded by snow. And if you’re in a cockpit of a starfighter, you’re in space. It’s going to feel more real.”
Deborah Chow will be directing Obi-Wan Kenobi. She’s directed a few episodes of The Mandalorian, and so the StarCraft technology will be familiar to her. All that she’s revealed about the show’s plot is that we can expect to see Obi-Wan “Just being a Jedi, it’s not safe.”
It doesn’t leave us too much, but it is still exciting to hear that we can expect to see some danger. With the show officially filming and in production, we can expect to hear more news and leaks in the future. The show will be on Disney+ sometime in 2022, along with Ahsoka and The Mandalorian season 3.
