The Clone Wars Episode 9 “Old Friends Not Forgotten” Review

The Clone Wars final season has returned and completed its arc on Ahsoka Tano and the Martez sisters. We’ve picked back up to Obi-Wan and Anakin as they fight the war. Unknowingly approaching the end of their time together Obi-Wan and Anakin fight valiantly together.

The newest episode brings Ahsoka back into the path of Anakin and Rex. Maul has control of Mandalore and Bo Katan wants her planet back. Now that she and Ahsoka have teamed up, they turned to the only people they knew could help, her old master, Anakin, and Obi-Wan. This is the best one yet.

The opening

This is part one of a two-part episode that will feature the siege of Mandalore. Their goal is to capture Maul and give Mandalore back to its people. Bo Katan doesn’t believe the Son of Dathomir is fit to rule.

We pick up with Obi-Wan struggling to lead a battle with Cody and Anakin coming in to help. The animation here is incredible, the shots of the ships flying in, the troopers storming the bridge, and the explosions. When Kenobi saved Cody I got so excited.

As Anakin approaches Obi-Wan to help it shows how much Anakin has matured over the events of the Clone Wars. Rather than storming the droids, lightsaber out, and guns firing, he approaches them slowly.

Anakin’s tactic proves to be successful and a bit humorous. With Rex and his squad right behind (or underneath) him ready for action armed with jetpacks, the Republic has every advantage now. They got the tactical droid they needed and got control of the bridge.

The Call

Anakin gets a call from a republic transmission. He had to get back to the ship ASAP to see who was calling and what was so important. When he and Obi-Wan get back they are in for a bit of a surprise.

Ahsoka Tano is calling with Bo Katan. They have no one else to turn to as they prepare to take back Mandalore and capture Maul. This is beginning to set up Ahsoka’s relationship with the Mandalorians and why she may have some relevance in The Mandalorian. She is recognized as a friend of the Mandalorians and a brave warrior.

The Meeting

Ahsoka and Katan get to Obi-Wan’s republic ship and tell them the plan. It takes a little bit of arguing to convince Obi-Wan to permit to siege the capital.

Anakin and Ahsoka take some time to catch up with each other, where we get to see one of the most beautiful moments in all of Star Wars. Ahsoka walks in and sees Rex and his squad with a familiar marking on their helmets. They painted the pattern from Ahsoka’s face onto their helmets to show how much she means to them, after all the battles they fought together.

The relationship that she has built with the clones will last a lifetime, as seen in Rebels, but the painting of the helmets shows how they feel about her homecoming. It was truly a beautiful moment and arguably one of the most emotional in the entire Star Wars collection.

She also gets her lightsabers back.

The siege

Coruscant is under attack and Obi-Wan needs to get there immediately to protect the giant city-planet and more importantly, Palpatine. Anakin gives the idea to split up the 501st and give Ahsoka command of the half to go to Mandalore. This is where Rex gets his promotion to Commander, Ahsoka can't lead them because she left the Grand Army of the Republic.

The siege is an epic battle and the animation of 2020 proves to be incredible. The advance has begun and Katan, Rex, and Ahsoka are leading the siege.

Ahsoka has not lost any skill. She may not have a jetpack like everyone else but that does not stop her. Her decent to the surface was extremely exciting to watch and she took out about a dozen deathwatch soldiers on the way down.

Bo-Katan got what she wanted when she blew in the doors of the prime minister and got back control of the capital, while Ahsoka ran off to find Maul.

The sewers

Some troopers found a lead in the sewer system of the city. This is where Maul has been waiting to trap the Jedi coming to seize the city and take him away. Everything was prepared by Maul and carefully articulated so that he can get Obi-Wan isolated.

Little did he know, Grevious attacked Coruscant and pulled Obi-Wan’s attention away from the siege of Mandalore; the wrong Jedi is there.

I have spoken

This is by far one of the best episodes of The Clone Wars, yet. Ahsoka gets back with the Republic to take back Mandalore and hunt down Maul. She is back with the clone troopers who are happy to serve her. Bo-Katan is grateful that she has the chance to get the city back from Maul, an outsider.

Anakin still feels for Ahsoka and cares for her. He was almost speechless when she called and saw her on the hologram. He wanted to help her cause help her find faith in the Jedi Order again, probably because he is going through something similar and knows how she feels.

I know I can’t wait for next weeks episode. Thank you for reading and may the force be with you.
